Rape control?

In our society, rape has not been addressed as a world problem even though women of every culture and country are influenced by it. “Rape has, all too often and for all too long, been considered a private, personal matter, and thus not worthy of public, political event.” (97) If rape happens to numerous women on a daily basis then why is it unpreventable when everyone knows it happens? What solutions do we have when in our society talking about rape is inappropriate? Victims want a chance to tell their story but our society wants to keep them quiet because the ugly truth is being revealed. People do not want to listen to the truth because they want to stay in the dark and pretend hoping that nothing bad will happen to them. The victims feel that they must suffer alone. When a woman is raped, she is the only victim who suffers at that exact instant who has been victimized by the same person or persons. However, with causes like war, the holocaust, and racism, everyone suffers at the same time by the same person. These survivors have people who were there with them where as in a rape situation it is usually only one female who are being victimized at that same instant by the same people. However, women who have not been victimized by the same person also have the same traumas, fears, and worries. Even though women were not mass raped at the same instance does not mean that their trauma has less of an impact as the holocaust or war. In our society we try to put a hierarchy on trauma and suffering. For example, slavery, the holocaust, and war are on the top while rape and domestic violence is on the bottom. I believe that because the public sees slavery and the holocaust as “more important” or “more serious” than one woman’s rape story is holding us back to stopping the crime. If people saw rape as serious as war, would it be stopped? Rape is a world problem because women of every culture, race, and country experience it therefore it makes rape seem common. Because women have to live with it on a daily basis, and it happens all the time, we as a nation feel that it is a natural fact to life. How do all nations come together to stop rape especially when it is so instilled in our culture? To an extent rape is up to the criminal because it is the criminal’s choice to refrain from raping women whereas with war, soldiers are under order of the government and have no control but to fight. In war, we know who the enemy is but with rape, any man can be a rapist just as any man can be innocent.  How do we prevent rape and punish the guilty?
