"I was talking about time. It's so hard for me to
believe in it,” demonstrates how one must feel when they have memories they
want to forget. (Morrison, 70). For me,
this quote reminds me of the saying “time heals all wounds,” If a person believes
that time heals the memory and that as it moves on they will forget will feel
doubtful if years have pasted and they still remember their torment. Later on
the Sethe says,” Some things go. Pass on. Some things just stay. I used to
think it was my rememory,” showing that she has no faith that time will take
away her memory of the bad times she went though. (Morrison, 70). Why is it that people remember the bad memories
the most? What exactly are the memories that Sethe has forgotten? She remembers
her terrible past as a slave and wants to forget it however time will not let
her because “. Some things you forget. Other things you never do. But it's not.
Places, places are still there,” meaning that in her rememory, she is witnessing
things as if they are still happening. (Morrison, 70). It is obvious that Sethe
is traumatized by her time as a slave because she talks about rememory in the
same way that victums do. Both Sethe and victims relive their traumatic experiences.
Sethe lives out hers by having flashbacks that she tries to control and keep
locked away. The things that are so unspeakable to her, she cannot tell to her
daughter Denver and believes that she will not understand how Sethe feels in
regards to time and how she tries to ignore her brutal past. Sethe wants to
move on and be happy perhaps she is hoping that as time moves on, she can
overcome everything. I think that Denver
might not understand Sethe while she so young but once she gets older, I believe
that Denver will have things that she will want to forget such as Beloved haunting
the house, how lonely she felt, or even her mother and the terrible stories she
might have told. Everyone has things that they do not want to remember yet they
still remember, even if it’s a bad break up, and abusive family member, or bad
crimes that they have committed. Everyone hopes that “time heals all wounds”
because we really do forget things or me may be reminded of them and only
thought that we have forgotten them. Do
we only remember the bad events the most because they are the most potent with
a desire to overcome them, control them, and block them away?
