A grain of sand-chris blackall

"I thought about moving a single grain of sand one millimeter. I took a wet wipe from my kit and cleaned the microwave." (93)
Oh my god, what is this nonsense? This attitude of changing the world one grain of sand at a time is really aggravating. People, the world will not change if you move a grain of sand. You could move ten thousand grains of sand and the Sahara would not look any different. This is a prime example of passive aggressive bologna. It's like asking yourself, 'How can I change the world without upsetting anyone?' Well, let me assure you that you cannot. Merely acting upon something does not change it. Even Oskar wiped the whole top of the microwave-- i.e. he didn't just take a single dust mite off the top. Change is something tangible, and action serves a purpose. With that in mind, then how does moving a grain of sand in the world's largest desert change anything for anyone?!?!?!?
I believe the bush the author is beating around is that we can all change the world, if only in a small way. That's truly beautiful, but honestly if you're going to try to change the world get a better attitude about the whole thing. Go big or go home. Why settle for grains of sand when you could move the desert?
