After this weeks reading us (the
readers) get a fast forward after the war. This section was titled
Love and it was very powerful to me. In this section Lieutenant Cross
confessed his love for Martha and how he burned the picture of Martha
that he had of her while in war. He explained how he never forgave
himself for Ted Lavenders death, he felt like it was his fault.
“..it was something that would never
go away..” (O'Brien 26)
During the war he beat himself up over
the death of Lavender because he felt if he was so distracted and
confused on worrying about will Martha ever love him like he loves
her and was more focused on watching after his soldiers and keeping
them in line he maybe could have kept Lavender from being killed. After
reading this section I was very proud of Lieutenant Cross for
confessing this and able to move on from it. Even though he'll never
forget it, he took the step in making the situation easier for
himself to heal and soon have closure from the incident that took
place.
